FAQ
What is a polygraph and credibility assessment?
A polygraph, commonly known as a lie detector test, is a tool used to measure physiological responses in individuals when they are asked a series of questions. Credibility assessment involves determining the trustworthiness and truthfulness of a person using various methods, including polygraph.
How does polygraph test work?
During a polygraph test, sensors are attached to the individual’s body to measure changes in physiological responses such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and skin conductivity while they are asked a series of questions. These responses are then analyzed by a trained examiner examiner to determine the likelihood of deception.
Are polygraph tests accurate?
While polygraph tests are generally considered to be around 85% – 90% accurate, there are still room for error. Factors such as the skill of the examiner, the design of the questions, and the individual’s physical and mental state can affect the accuracy of the test?
Can one fail a polygraph test due to nervousness?
It is natural for an examinee to feel nervous during a polygraph test regardless whether he/she is innocent or guilty. However, nervousness of one should not affect the results as the polygraph instrument will be calibrated by the examiner to work off the examinee’s nervousness.
Can polygraph tests be manipulated?
It is difficult to manipulate a polygraph test successfully, as trained examiners can detect signs of deception with anti-countermeasures tools. However, there have been cases of individuals trying to influence the results through techniques such as controlled breathing or muscle tensing. If one is found to be manipulating the test, the polygraph test report will state a “Purposeful Non Cooperation” result.
How long does a polygraph test take?
A polygraph typically lasts between 1 – 3 hours, depending on the number of test issues involved, and the complexity of the case.
Are polygraph results admissible in court?
The admissibility of polygraph test results in court varies by jurisdiction. In some cases, they may be used as evidence or to support other evidence, but they are generally not considered conclusive evidence in court.
In Singapore, polygraph result is not admissible in court. It is generally used as an investigative tool in law enforcement agencies.
